윈도 서버 2012 는 윈도 미디어 서비스 WMS 를 지원하지 않는다.

결론부터 말하자면,

Windows Server 2012 은 Windows Media Services (WMS) 을 더이상 지원하지 않는다고 한다. 

대신에, IIS Media Services ( Smooth Streaming ) 은 계속 지원한다.

또한, 미디어 파일은 윈도미디어서비스용 미디어파일 포맷과 IIS 미디어 서비스용 미디어 파일의 포맷은 다르기 때문에 그대로 사용할 수 없다. 다시 인코딩을 해야 한다는 말이다. ㅠㅠ

사실 IIS Media Services 가 새로운 것은 아니다.

IIS Media Services 4.1 (which runs on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2012)

에서와 같이 Windows Server 2008 때부터 있던 것이었다. 

두 서비스의 차이점이자 MS 가 WMS 를 버린 이유는 스마트폰 등 모바일 기기의 등장으로 보인다. 

mms:// 로 시작하는 WMS 는 모바일에서 동작하지 않는다. 다른 브라우저 들도 지원하지 않는다. 

IIS 미디어 서비스는 모바일에서도 서비스 된다는 것이 큰 장점이다. 물론, 미디어 파일 포맷을 변경해야 한다. ㅡㅡ

또한 클라우드 기반의 윈도 애저 Windows Azure 서비스가 나온 것과도 무관하지 않아 보인다. ^^
